The Canal Chapter invites artists of all disciplines and media to submit project proposals for work to be developed during the 4 weeks residency. Work created during the residency may be eligible, at the discretion of the curator and artist, to be shown at The Canal Chapter Exhibit, which will take place in September.
The goal of the residency is to support artists in realizing works-in-progress and the production of new work, as well as giving artists an opportunity to emerge themselves in the New York Downtown Scene. Throughout the residency period, the resident artist(s) use the gallery as a studio environment, creating their work, with open studio hours for the public to watch the work-in-process. We aim to provide a space for visionary artists whose work stimulate ideas and expand artistic boundaries and conventions.
In addition, the program is a "work / live" environment and the residents will be provided mandatory accommodation at the gallery. The Canal Chapter Artist Residency participants are selected based on their dedication to their art practice, artistic innovation, and craftsmanship. The Canal Chapter Artist Residency encourages both collaborative and independent projects as ways to create a positive multicultural artistic exchange.
The Canal Chapter Artist Residency Project is open to artists in all genres such as visual, performing, design arts, new media, installation, writers, composers, book arts and crafts/folk arts. We welcome applications from professional artists, graduate students, undergraduate students and non-students. Artists can apply as individuals or in collaborative teams. Established artists as well as emerging artists can apply.
