London-based Apart has teamed up with Beady Minces to create a distinctly British exhibition.
Beady Minces, the creation of British-born photographer Steve Shaw, is the newest and most ambitious arrival on Abbot Kinney’s strip. “Well, Steve’s British and so am I, and since we’re both here in California we thought we’d fly the flag for a few weeks and put together a show that had a bit of a British flavour, so that’s exactly what we’ve done” says Apart founder Adrian Palengat.
Although “London Calling” will have a rich British vein running through it, the artists are not all British; of the eleven chosen for the show, seven are British and the remainder are from Spain, Thailand, Canada and France - but all reside in London. Apart, a 2500 sq ft space on bohemian Portobello Road,was formed by Adrian Palengat in 1999. Specializing in international artists working in different media and known for its simple and unpretentious approach, the showroom soon became a favorite of artists and collectors alike. Collaborations with a wide range of corporations ensued, ranging from LVMH, Commes des Garcons, Royal Elastics, K Swiss, Jones Soda, Duotone Snowboards and Vladivar Vodka. In November 2006, the space on Portobello was sold and two mini Aparts were opened in Tokyo. In 2007, Adrian Palengat took the showroom on the road, curating shows in France, Tokyo, London and Milan. Shows in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Zurich, Las Vegas, France and London are planned for 2008. Beady Minces owner Steve Shaw is a fashion and celebrity photographer whose work has appeared in L.A. Confidential, Hollywood life, 944, Elle, Marie Claire and Wig.
