I was invited to a walrus’s birthday party.
What the hell, I thought, do you get
for a walrus.
The chips were down and
I only had ten dollars.
I got him a snow globe.
I felt very sure of myself
as I knocked on his door.
A sea otter opened
the door and grabbed
the present from my hands
before I could say
anything.
He unwrapped
and quickly started hammering
the snow globe against
the front steps.
Like an oyster dinner, I guess.
We both stared in dismay.
A brief gurgle and there
were white flecks all
over his sleek coat.
I gestured to his sleeve
but he’d already
started licking
the fake snow away.
He looked up at me
crazily
and whispered -
I barely heard it over the din
of the party inside -
