buffalo gals

Malcolm McLaren’s song Buffalo Gals came out in 1982. It’s a fusion of Country and Hip Hop, and it was ultimately, hugely influential in introducing Hip Hop to the British music scene.

I remember it first time around and it’s firmly planted in the fabric of my art school experience, back when we wore black and soaked up the coolness of all things McLaren: the music of Bow Wow Wow, the New York Dolls and of course the by-then-defunct Sex Pistols, as well as his interest in the Situationist International movement. We were all a bunch of white Canadian kids who had little idea of what Buffalo Gals would do to the music scene.
