San Francisco, 1940 - 1942 - New bag paintings by Chris Crites

Bluebottle Art Gallery

Opening Reception: October 7, 6 - 8pm

Runs: October 1 - 29, 2006

Chris Crites recreates found mug shots from the 1890’s through the 1950’s, painted on paper bags. The effect of these voyeuristic works is both morose and darkly nostalgic.

From the artist:

During the first few of years of U.S. involvement in WWII, fear, paranoia and a propagandistic sense of national pride grip the population. This is especially true on the West coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile, people go about their business. Pimping, dealing, fighting, stealing.

Bluebottle Art Gallery, 415 East Pine Street. Galley, Seattle, WA, 98122.

Hours are Tuesday - Sunday 12 - 7
