Presenting Mr. Sanpo AKA Sir Sanpsalot AKA Sanpo-san AKA He Who Walks, the newest free papertoy from Josh McKible.
He originally made his debut at the Tokyo Urban Paper show, but it’s just taken me a while to post him. It’s a double-sided design with posable arms so I think it will also lend itself well to customizing. You can download the full version here and the blank template, ready for custom work here. Originally done for the Tokyo Urban Paper Show, “World’s Best Dad” is an expansion on my “NaniDad and the Peeps” set which is still available on my Etsy site.

I’ve been meaning to post this ever since the show closed back in September, but this is the first chance I’ve had to get it together. I’m hoping to post something else from the show soon, a new character I created for the show. And *gasp*, it’s NOT a NaniBird…. who knows how long it will take me to get that guy up…

But in the meanwhile you can get “World’s Best Dad” right here.

Here’s my poster for the Urban Paper show that I’m organizing in Tokyo. It will be at Café Pause in Ikebukuro and will run from Sept. 7th to the 20th. Since not everyone who was in the book will be in the show, I didn’t want to use the photo collage from previous shows that included all the designs. I  also wanted to come up with something that more generically addressed the idea of papertoys and could actually BE a papertoy as well, but one that could also work as a flat image. So the poster is also the “official” mascot of the Tokyo show.

I was psyched to receive this in the mail last week. It had been almost a year(?) since the publisher, Korero Books, contacted me about including an illustration I had done for a flyer promoting the burlesque musical act of a couple of friends, Cherry Typhoon and Satoko. Satako belts out the tunes and commands the organ (as well as a variety of drums, whistles, etc), while Cherry mesmerizes the crowd with her ample figure and outsized stage persona. They blend aspects of both Japanese and burlesque performance traditions with humor and sexuality. It’s like some crazy Tom Waits meets Kabuki!

Besides showing an amazing array of contemporary work being done, the book is also a great resource of historical posters, highlighting some real gems of the past. The book is full of amazing, sometimes outrageous imagery, and I’m really glad to have been included.

A few months ago I was contacted by what I had thought was an online only Korean design magazine called “w.e.b.” (you can see from whence my confusion sprang), asking me if I’d like to submit some images and do an interview with them. Sure, why not….

Well, I got a very pleasant surprise the other day, when a fat, glossy magazine showed up in the mail with my interview in it. Normally I would be a bit freaked out to see my illustrations cut up and reused like this, but I’m really pretty pleased with the way it turned out!

Presenting MonkeyButts, a custom job I did for Dolly’ Oblong’s brilliant Paper Totem! series. When I can (ie: have the time…deadlines, deadlines), I love collaborating on other artist’s templates and Dolly’s design was just too good to pass up! On a whim, I entered “The Dears”, a papertoy collaboration I did with Ben the Illustrator, into this year’s American Illustration, and it got in(!?!). Onto the website, not the book itself, but still I’m quite pleased. Apparently (from the email they sent out), “it was one of only 583 images from a record-breaking 8,100 submitted” to make the cut.

If you’re going to be anywhere near L.A. this Saturday, May 2nd then be sure to swing by the Mobius Gallery to check out the Urban Paper show, a papertoy exhibition and release party for Matt Hawkin’s amazing “Urban Paper” book ( Amazon link ).

I’m really pleased to have been invited to participate in both the book and the show. My contribution to the book was a custom design I did (below) of my NaniBirds called NaniDad and the Peeps.

In further celebration of the book release and show, I have 3 copies of the Urban Paper book I’d like to give away. But you’ll have to work a little for this one ^__^ …. I’m hoping to make Batch Four of NaniBirds released the best batch ever. So I’m hoping the offer of a free book will get your knives and glue sticks out.

Using a complex algorithm of date submitted times complexity of design squared by what I ate that day divided by my mood and employing the completely undemocratic method of what I like best, I’ll send three lucky designers a copy of the book.

Here’s a few pieces I did for Women’s Health magazine on how to deal with various bad situations. I really had fun doing these. I particularly liked playing with the new AI blob brush on the dog’s head… very fluid and a great addition to the toolset.

I’m thinking that dog’s head would make a pretty cool t-shirt.

I am so psyched to be a part of this project…

Papercrafting legend Shin Tanaka invited NaniBird (aka mckibillo aka me(!)) along with 6 other designers to contribute designs that declare the need to keep it real and be original. You can check out and download all 7 of the designs here.

I did this recently for Spectrum magazine, put out by the IEEE, to accompany an article about a recent Supreme Court decision that would make the patenting of purely ideas, or business methods, more difficult.

I think it could make a pretty cool t-shirt.
